China ramps up tougher pandemic control

The U.S. says it won’t be deterred by China’s latest sanctions. Beijing recently penalized four American officials serving on a religious freedom commission. The move came after the U.S. levied its own sanctions.

China plans to keep a steep tariff in place for at least another year. The tax impacts a certain U.S. product–and dates back to the Trump era.

And lockdown orders tighten in China. 35 million people are under stay-at-home orders, as cases of the Omicron and Delta variants paralyze certain cities.
