AUDIO: Walking in the Power of the Holy Spirit

Sermon Notes Series: Walking in the Power of the Holy Spirit (BH)

As believers, God desires to equip us with His power to overcome the enemy and live victoriously. This divine empowerment is not just a distant promise but a present reality available through the Holy Spirit. By welcoming the Spirit’s presence, seeking His guidance, and embracing our birthright as children of God, we can walk in the authority, liberty, and transformative power that belongs to us through Jesus Christ. This teaching explores how to access and live in this power, drawing from key scriptures and principles.

The Holy Spirit: The Source of God’s Power

The Holy Spirit’s greatest desire is to take what belongs to Jesus and impart it to us (John 16:14). Everything that belongs to Jesus—His life, authority, power, love, and grace—is our inheritance as children of God (1 Corinthians 3:21). This is our birthright, and the Spirit is eager to make it a reality in our lives. However, to walk in this power, we must actively invite the Holy Spirit into our hearts and lives.

Welcoming the Spirit

The Holy Spirit does not force Himself upon us; He is the Spirit of Grace who waits to be welcomed (Hebrews 10:29). When we invite Him, His power becomes available, transforming our lives and enabling us to glorify Jesus. Jesus Himself declared, “If you ask anything in My name, I will do it” (John 14:14). By asking for the Spirit’s presence and power, we open the door to receive all that God has for us.

The Power of Jesus’ Lordship

Recognizing Jesus as Lord is foundational to walking in the Spirit’s power. 1 Corinthians 12:3 states that no one can declare Jesus as Lord except by the Holy Spirit. When we acknowledge His lordship, we affirm His authority over all powers, both spiritual and natural. This declaration, empowered by the Spirit, breaks bondages and brings liberty (Romans 8:2). Knowing Jesus as Lord liberates us from defeat, depression, and oppression, enabling us to walk victoriously as He did.

The Transformative Work of the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is the agent of transformation, bringing renewal, strength, and divine purpose to every area of our lives. Here are key ways He empowers us:

1. Renewing and Restoring

The Spirit is the Spirit of Renewal, making all things new (Titus 3:5). Psalm 103:1-5 reminds us that God “forgives all your iniquities, heals all your diseases, redeems your life from destruction, and renews your youth like the eagle’s.” When the Spirit touches our lives, He brings healing, restoration, and vitality, enabling us to live with divine strength and purpose.

2. Empowering Our Words

The Holy Spirit gives our words life and authority (John 16:7). When we speak under His anointing, our testimony convicts others of sin, righteousness, and judgment, just as it did when Peter preached and three thousand were saved (Acts 2:41). Our words, inspired by the Spirit, carry the same power that flowed from Jesus, enabling us to impact lives and advance God’s Kingdom.

3. Strengthening the Inner Man

Ephesians 3:16-19 reveals that the Spirit strengthens our inner man, rooting us in faith and love. This divine strength transforms our prayer life, making it focused and effective. When we pray in the Spirit, we approach God with confidence, knowing He hears and answers (Ephesians 3:20). This strength also enables us to walk in faith, overcoming obstacles and living in the fullness of God’s love.

4. Leading as Sons of God

As those led by the Spirit, we are sons and daughters of God (Romans 8:14). The Spirit of Adoption enables us to cry out, “Abba, Father,” and live in intimate relationship with God (Galatians 4:6). This sonship delivers us from the bondage of sin and worldly desires, allowing us to walk in trust and dependence on our Heavenly Father. The Spirit guides us into God’s will, ensuring we never stray from His purpose.

5. Inspiring Prayer and Worship

Prayer and worship in the Spirit are key to accessing God’s power. Jude 20 encourages us to build ourselves up in faith by praying in the Holy Spirit, while Ephesians 6:18 calls us to pray “all prayers and supplications in the Spirit.” These Spirit-inspired prayers are the ones God answers, as they align with His will. Similarly, true worship is offered in Spirit and truth (Philippians 3:3), connecting us to the heart of God and exalting Jesus.

6. Revealing God’s Calling

The Holy Spirit reveals our unique purpose in God’s Kingdom (Acts 13:2). Just as Jesus knew His calling through the Spirit’s guidance (Luke 4:18), we can know where we fit in the Body of Christ. This certainty empowers us to run our race with confidence, fulfilling the work God has prepared for us (Ephesians 2:10).

The Promise of Revival: The Former and Latter Rain

God promises an outpouring of His Spirit in the last days, described as the “former and latter rain” coming together (Joel 2:23). This signifies a season of unprecedented spiritual harvest, where sowing and reaping happen simultaneously (Amos 9:13). In this revival, prayers are answered before they are uttered, and souls are saved even before the gospel is preached (Isaiah 65:24). This outpouring begins with prayer, fasting, and repentance, as God’s people seek Him with all their hearts (Joel 2:12).

Keys to Effective Prayer

To walk in this power, our prayer life must be Spirit-led. Here are three keys from Romans 8:

  1. Die to the Flesh (Romans 8:13): The flesh hinders effective prayer. By crucifying our carnal nature, we open the door for the Spirit to lead us.
  2. Walk in the Spirit (Galatians 5:25): Living in the Spirit enables us to pray with divine power, free from the lusts of the flesh.
  3. Pray with the Spirit (Romans 8:15): Partnering with the Holy Spirit in prayer ensures our petitions reach the Father through the Son, securing answers and breakthroughs.

Yielding to the Holy Spirit

To experience the fullness of God’s power, we must yield to the Holy Spirit. Jesus Himself was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tested, emerging in the power of the Spirit (Luke 4:1-14). Similarly, we must allow the Spirit to lead us through challenges, teaching us to rely on God’s Word (“It is written”) rather than our own experiences. This yielding empowers our witness, enabling us to preach the gospel, heal the brokenhearted, and set captives free (Luke 4:18).

The Role of the Holy Spirit Through Scripture

The Holy Spirit’s work is evident throughout the Bible:

  • Genesis: He moves to restore creation (Genesis 1:2).
  • Exodus: He empowers for ministry (Exodus 31:3).
  • Psalms: He imparts a willing spirit (Psalm 51:12).
  • Isaiah: He is the Spirit of Burning, purifying and empowering (Isaiah 4:4).
  • Joel: He is poured out on all flesh (Joel 2:28).
  • Acts: He oversees the Church (Acts 20:28).
  • Revelation: He speaks to the churches (Revelation 2:7).

In every book, the Spirit transforms, empowers, and reveals God’s will, making Him indispensable to our Christian walk.

Conclusion: Claiming Your Birthright

As believers, everything that belongs to Jesus belongs to us through the Holy Spirit. His power, authority, love, and grace are ours for the asking. By welcoming the Spirit, declaring Jesus’ lordship, praying and worshiping in the Spirit, and yielding to His guidance, we can walk in divine power. This is the time of the latter rain, a season of revival where God’s Spirit is poured out in unprecedented ways. Let us pray with the Spirit, walk in the Spirit, and live as sons and daughters of God, claiming our inheritance and glorifying Jesus in all we do.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, we welcome You as our divine Partner. Reveal Jesus in all His glory, empower our prayers, and lead us into Your perfect will. Let Your power flow through us, transforming lives and bringing revival. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
