Japan, once regarded as a global model for COVID-19 prevention, has recently drawn attention for a troubling trend: a sharp increase in excess deaths following repeated mRNA COVID-19 vaccinations. Despite having one of the highest vaccination rates in the world—averaging 3.3 doses per person—Japan experienced a surge in cases and deaths after the emergence of the Omicron variant, with excess mortality rising significantly in 2022 and 2023.

Excess Deaths Beyond COVID-19

Japan recorded more than 1,400 excess deaths per million people during this period, a figure three times higher than in the United States. Strikingly, official COVID-19 deaths accounted for only about 10% of these excess deaths. As of November 2024, the Japanese government has approved payouts for 8,432 vaccine-related injuries and 903 deaths. These numbers already surpass all compensation claims from every other vaccine used in Japan over the last 47 years combined. Reported cases include young individuals, such as a 14-year-old girl who died after vaccination.

Reported Adverse Reactions

Adverse health outcomes under investigation include myocarditis, pericarditis, blood clotting disorders, autoimmune diseases, and potential links to certain cancers, such as breast, ovarian, and pancreatic cancers. Researchers note that the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein interacts with estrogen receptors and can localize within the nucleus, raising concerns about long-term biological effects.

Immunological Concerns

Some studies suggest repeated vaccination may suppress immunity, leading to chronic infections and altered antibody responses. Increased levels of immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4) and regulatory T cells have been observed in vaccinated individuals, possibly weakening their ability to clear the virus. Wastewater monitoring data also appear to support higher ongoing infection rates.

Calls for Transparency and Further Study

Experts, including former U.S. CDC Director Robert Redfield, have voiced concerns about long-term risks, particularly for younger populations. Japanese health authorities, however, have been hesitant to release detailed data. Early studies had already suggested that vaccination did not significantly reduce viral load, casting doubt on the rationale for vaccinating younger people to “protect the elderly.”
